Mark Jaquith, Michelle Anderson, and Mark McLaren to Speak at WordCamp Portland

Posted By Aaron on August 29th, 2010

We’ve confirmed our final three speakers for our program at WordCamp Portland. WordPress Core lead developer Mark Jaquith, interactive storyteller Michelle Anderson, and business blogger Mark McClaren will be presenting. Head over to our full list of speakers to check out more information on all of our speakers.

Now that we have all of our speakers confirmed, I’ll be putting the final touches on the exact schedule of who is speaking at what time and on which day. I hope to announce the tentative schedule in the next week or so.

FREE WORDCAMP TICKETS!

Posted By morganpdx on August 24th, 2010

Get yer tickets right here, (sort of) free, without shelling out any $$$:

We want YOU for the WordCamp army!

WordCamp needs 24 good beings (actually even kinda ok beings will do), to volunteer at the event.  We have a LIMITED number of slots available and they are going fast!  We need you, want you, got to have you!

So what do you have to do? Volunteer, even for just ONE day. You won’t be enslaved for the whole day (unless you want to!).  There are plenty of things to do but most of them are finite in duration. Loan us your body, with brain still (mostly) attached and you get that Golden Ticket!  Actually I don’t think it’s golden, but you get the idea.

Here is what we need:

  • Your name
  • Your email
  • Your phone
  • which day you would rather work
  • any special skills or proclivities you might have (“I am good at audio” or “I like to serve coffee”, “I am a massage therapist”, “I dunno but I am a live body”)

Send this information to our Volunteer Coordinator, Louie Alvis.

None of this work is hard, some of it is fun but ALL of it is necessary. It could even give you a nice reference for your resumé! As we build this roster of Olympians you will be informed as to what day and what job you will have. Please show up on the designated day to get your assignments and Voila! WordCamp for Free!

Much Like the Terminator, Matt Will Be Back

Posted By Aaron on August 19th, 2010

That one time? At WordCamp? When Matt Mullenweg held a “town hall” style session fielding questions from WordCamp Portland attendees about all things WordPress?

Matt Mullenweg speaking to WordCamp PortlandHe’s doing it again.

I’m excited to announce that Matt will again attend WordCamp Portland, giving an informal “Town Hall with Matt” presentation where attendees will have a chance to ask questions to the founder of WordPress and Chief BBQ Taste Tester for Automattic.

If you haven’t yet purchased your ticket for WordCamp Portland, I think you now have one more reason to get on that.

Whoa! What the…whoa!

You know, this guy:

AAAAAAAHHHH

AAAAAAAHHHH

I suspect that a lot of you might be feeling a bit like that too, with all the WordCamp Portland 2010 info flying at you in the past week. Speakers, schedules, tickets, times, dates, whaaa? I thought I’d just break it all down for you in nice little bite size chunks. Summarize the important bits. Don’t worry, it’ll all be ok, and you’ll go to WordCamp and THEN you can be blown away, by awesome.

First, The Schedule, aka the When.

The event starts on September 18th (Saturday) at 9am (not 8pm like it currently says on the Tickets Oregon page!), throwing amazing talks your way until 5pm. Right around 6pm-ish we’ll have a NotAfterAfterParty. It’s the big party that normally is after an event where you get to mingle with the speakers and attendees and talk about all things WordPressy and have a few drinks and a general good time, but it’s in the middle, not after! Got it? Great! We’ll have the details on that a bit later. Sunday the 19th, you return for another day of WordPress goodness and delight at 9am, continuing until about 5pm or until everyone’s done and goes home.

Now, the Where.

We’re going back to the fabulous space at WebTrends, located at 851 Southwest 6th Ave, in Portland. [map] It’s right downtown, half a block from the Pioneer Courthouse Square, with excellent transit access. In fact, I’d recommend taking a bus or the MAX down, since parking down there is a bit rough. A lot rough, actually. There are parking garages nearby, however. The NotAfterAfterParty location is still TBD, but we’re looking at places close by to WebTrends so you don’t necessarily need to drive if you’d like to attend.

You know what’s next right? Yep. The Who. (Not the band)

We’ve got some amazing speakers lined up! This year, we had so many great submissions that we decided to have something of a dual track. We’ve got one track for the hardcore dev types with everything from theming, WPMU, using GitHub, and even some beginner PHP and CSS dev talks, and a second track for people interested in the less technical topics such as UX/UI, marketing, and even one of my favorite topics, accessibility. I’m going to be hardpressed to pick which talks to attend!

What

We’re just gonna go ahead and skip that one. If you’re here, I figure you know what by now, right? If not, check this link.

Why

Because. Because we can.

Finally, ZOMG HOW?? I WANNA GO THIS IS AWESOME, TELL ME!!!

Well now, that’s the spirit! All you have to do is go to the Tickets Oregon site, locate the WordCamp Portland 2010 event, and buy a ticket! When you do, you’ll be asked for your desired Tshirt size, because among all the other amazingness you get for your $40 (plus $2 service charge), you get a Tshirt with the new WordCamp Portland logo emblazoned across the front, and our amazing sponsors featured on the back. Cool!! Remember, you MUST have your physical ticket with you for entrance on BOTH days. This way, if you want to share your ticket with someone, you can just give it to them for the second day. Only one Tshirt per ticket, and you’ll probably need it for the NotAfterAfterParty as well. Stay tuned!

Registration Announcements

Posted By jarvitron on August 2nd, 2010

Hello! It’s Jarvitron here and I’m sure you’re all wondering “When is registration going to open up so I can finally put my grubby dollars down and buy a ticket?”, and I’m here to tell you the answer is Tuesday at 10.

Other questions and answers?

  1. “Will I have to tattoo a sigil or code onto my body in order to trade goods or attend your event?”
    • Emphatically, NO. After much spirited debate, we are doing just a plain old physical ticket this time. This ticket will be required at the door on both days of the event and will magically transmogrify IN YOUR HANDS into your ticket for the afterparty.
  2. “That’s super boring. Can I transfer my ticket to someone else?”
    • Yes, a thousand times yes. (Frankly this is what killed my sigil tattoo idea). The transfer process is simple. We get a sample of both YOUR DNA, and the DNA of the person you want to transfer to. After a long bout with the sequencer, we should have at least one viable, undifferentiated “stem cell”. We knock the nucleus out of an egg cell, and then you just hand your physical ticket over to the other person and they use it to get into the event. You don’t even have to tell us about the transfer. Please do not tell us about the ticket transfer.
  3. “ZOMG ticket prices went up, b..b..b.bbut why?”
    • This year’s Wordcamp is WORTH IT. Twice the number of speakers, two tracks of talks (one code focus and one non-technical). When you see the speakers we have in store, I will simply advise you to look down and observe that your socks have been blown clean off your feet.
  4. I want to volunteer!
    • Slow down there Enthusiasmo! We’ll have an open call for volunteers in the coming weeks.

There will be many more updates to come as we announce speakers, call for volunteers and sponsors, I’ll have a post up Tuesday with a link to the registration page. Thanks for your patience everybody!

Announcing Our 2010 WordCamp Portland Speakers

Posted By Aaron on July 12th, 2010

With over twice as many submissions as we had available speaking time, we faced some hard decisions as we put together our lineup for WordCamp Portland 2010. Taking into consideration various factors, we have a great set of presentations to announce. We have topics for everyone from blogging newbies up through hardcore code-slingers. Most of our presenters are from the Portland area, but we also have speakers traveling from Texas, California, Georgia, Nevada, Massachusetts, and New York to talk about WordPress.

Read our full list of speakers including session titles, descriptions, and short biographies.

Speakers/Schedule: Stay Tuned

Posted By Aaron on June 16th, 2010

Yesterday was the final day for speaker submissions for WordCamp Portland, and you guys didn’t disappoint. We’ve got 50-ish proposals that cover all sorts of WordPress and blogging material from the super-technical to the super-newbie.

We’ll be throwing all of those proposals in a blender, flipping the switch, and seeing what flies out.

Not really. This is not ‘nam… this is WordCamp. There are rules. In the next couple of weeks several of the WordCamp Portland organizers will review the proposals and make some decisions about the schedule and speakers. If you submitted a proposal, you should hear from us by the end of the month. Once we have things somewhat formed, we’ll announce the speaker list publicly.

Registration Update

Posted By jarvitron on June 14th, 2010

I know we’re getting more questions on the Twitter registration for this year’s Wordcamp PDX, and while you can’t buy tickets yet, here are the early details.

Registration will open August 1st, there will be a general announcement on this site with the link to buy your tickets.

You will receive a physical ticket, you will have to keep this physical ticket on your person while at the conference.

I’ll have more details in the weeks to come, go enjoy some sunshine (if it ever comes back).

Announcing Our First Speakers (and a Public Call for Speakers)

Posted By Aaron on April 22nd, 2010

We’re still several months from WordCamp Portland 2010 (the event is on September 18-19), but I’m excited to announce we’ve already confirmed a few key speakers and that we’re opening the public call to fill the rest of our speaker lineup.

As we get closer to the event we’ll post more details but we have a few great speakers already planned:

  • Jane Wells (UX Lead for Automattic), will speak about “How WordPress Decisions Are Made” – a look at how choices are made about the direction and details of WordPress.
  • Food Carts Portland is a great resource for Portland’s awesome food cart scene. Brett “Dieselboi” Burmeister will speak about how food carts are using social media as part of (or their entire) marketing efforts.
  • Designer/developer Austin Passy of Frosty Web Designs will be talking about design and theming with WordPress – we’re still working out the exact angle on his talk, but expect something visually pleasing.
  • Photographer and Blogger Aaron Hockley of Social Photo Talk will present “Are You Cheating On Your Blog? Splitting Time Amongst Social Media Sites” – a look at how to mix and use various social media sites for your brand or identity.

Want to Speak at WordCamp Portland? Read This…

We’re now actively looking for speakers to fill out the rest of our lineup. We’ll again have two full days of conference, meaning we’ll be selecting several more speakers. We might do something different this year… longer presentations should be 45 minutes, but we also might feature shorter 15 minute talks. Topics should revolve around WordPress and blogging (pretty much anything related is fair game). Themes, plugins, authoring, content, legal issues, RSS, voice, writing, database/server admin, you name it….

If you’d like to present at WordCamp Portland, please contact speaker coordinator Aaron Hockley via email (aaron@hockleyphoto.com). Let us know your topic, whether you think it would work best as a longer 45 minute presentation or a quicker 15 minute talk. A short bio/background/links to help us learn about you are also appreciated. We’ll solicit a bunch of ideas and then the organizers will make selections to fill out a well-rounded docket of presentations.
